Timeless LGBTQ+ Wedding Photos at San Francisco City Hall
Everything You Need to Know From a San Francisco City Hall Wedding Photographer
San Francisco City Hall is one of the most iconic places in California to get married, whether you're planning a small civil ceremony, an intimate celebration with family, or a beautifully romantic LGBTQ+ wedding. As a San Francisco City Hall wedding photographer, I’ve documented countless love stories in this building and created this guide to help you feel fully prepared for your day.
Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions couples ask when planning their San Francisco City Hall wedding.

What Are the Different Options for San Francisco City Hall Weddings?
City Hall offers several ceremony styles, depending on your guest count and how formal you want your day to feel:
1. Civil Ceremony
The classic option. A quick and simple legal ceremony performed by a City Hall officiant. Perfect for elopements, LGBTQ+ weddings, and couples who want a beautiful but low-stress experience.
2. Private Ceremony
You can reserve a dedicated space (such as the Fourth Floor Gallery or Mayor’s Balcony) for a more private and elegant wedding. This is ideal for couples with guests or those who want more time and privacy.
3. Photography Session Only
Some couples choose to legally marry elsewhere but have a full romantic photoshoot inside San Francisco City Hall. The architecture, light, and atmosphere make it the perfect backdrop.
What Is the Civil Ceremony Like at SF City Hall — and How Long Does It Take?
A San Francisco City Hall civil ceremony is short and well-organized. Here’s what you can expect:
Arrive about 15 minutes early to check in.
You’ll first check in at Room 160.
After that, you’ll wait in the hallway until your name is called.
You’ll then meet your officiant in Room 168. (Photography is not permitted in Room 168, but don’t worry, we’ll get plenty of beautiful images afterward.)
The ceremony itself usually lasts 5–10 minutes, followed by time for portraits around the building.
How Do We Know How Much Photography Coverage to Book?
Every wedding at San Francisco City Hall is unique. For some couples, City Hall is the highlight of the day. For others, it’s just one chapter of a longer celebration. This is why I offer transparent, à la carte pricing with no surprises and help you build a custom timeline that fits your vision.
Here are my general recommendations:
Civil ceremony + couple session → 1 hour
Private ceremony with guests (up to ~35+) → 1–2 hours
City Hall + guests + couple session inside and outside → 2 hours
If you’re not sure how much time you’ll need, I’ll walk you through your timeline and help you choose the perfect amount of coverage.
